6GB RAM smartphones coming thanks to Samsung
We have very good news for all fans of High RAM Powered Phones. Samsung started mass production of their new LPDDR4 DRAM, allowing for next Generation of Smartphones to have 6GB RAM.
Samsung essentially produced the industry’s first 12Gigabit LPDDR4 RAM with Samsung’s 20nm manufacturing process. The real advantage of those chips is that they have a 50% higher density PCB layout with increased capacity as well as reduced power usage. Both of these are very important factors in small devices like a phone/tablet where every mm2 and mW matters.
Pleae note that this is Gigabits, not Gigabytes. 12 Gigabits is around 1.5GB of RAM. Most high end smartphones have four memory dies, that means 1.5GB x 4 = 6GB RAM phones for us.
While some of you might say, what should we do with 6GB RAM, please think about this:
- 1) As we have newer ultra-high resolution, like Sony Xperia Z5 Premium with 4K Screen, way more RAM needs to be used by the GPU. 6GB RAM is not that unreasonable when a 4K screen has to support 8MP. Compare this to 1MP of most cheaper laptops today.
- 2) The best part of these new 12Gb LPDDR4 Samsung chips is increased speed. The new chips are 30% faster, which means more bandwith for detailed graphics and general performance.
When will we get the first 6GB RAM phones in Malaysia?
Now most of you will likely ask, when do i get to buy the first Smartphone with 6GB RAM? The last time Samsung started mass producing new memory chips, it took about 6 month to be used in a new finished product for retail. This would make the Samsung Galaxy S7, a very likely candidate to be the first 6GB RAM phone. Since this would be in March 2016, it could of course also be that Asus pulls the next stunt, and will give 6GB RAM to their Asus Zenfone 3 smartphone for 2016. What do you think which smartphone will be first to get 6GB RAM?
