Today LG launched its long awaited Flagship Phone the G3. The LG G2 was one of the most underrated smartphones in 2013, with better specs and yet cheaper price then HTC ONE or S4. The LG G3 is spec packed and promises to play on the very upper end of the smart phone segment. Just like HTC, LG has been signifcantly less popular then Samsung or Apple on the premium end and have lot of competition on the lower price segment from Huawei and Xiaomi.
Can the G3 be a game changer for LG and put them finally back in the sunlight? Like Samsung, LG is not popular for its amazing design, so it all comes down to the G3 Specs and Hardware. Lets compare the LG G3 vs Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, Sony Xperia Z2 and the chinese Flagship Killer Oppo Find 7 and the OnePlus One.
As you can see in the Comparison above, the LG G3 is definitely on of the Elite Android Smartphones. All smartphones above sport the quad-core 801 Snapdragon with Adreno 330 GPU, the strongest CPU on the market, although the Z2 has a slower variant. Because the Oppo Find 7 is not available, not even in China, the LG G3 is the only smartphone to have a QHD display with a 2560 x 1440 resolution. THat is the same resolution as a 27 inch Apple Macbook. The G3 will come in two different base versions, 2GB of Ram and 16GB internal memory and 3GB of Ram paired with 32 GB of internal memory.
Always a key feature to differentiate between smartphones is the camera and picture quality. Normally all brands try different strategies to position themselves in the top spot with the camera. The HTC One (M8) uses two different sensors above each other on the back, one a Ultrapixel 4MP camera and one a depth sensor, to decide which obects are in foreground and which in background. LG is using an 13MP BSI sensor from Sony with Optical Image Stabilization. The LG G2 was famous for its OIS system and on the G3 it gets improved with OIS+. Another feature we can look forward is the laser autofocus system for the camera. With the laser autofocus the time between pushing the camera button and capturing the picture gets significantly reduced. In the official launch even, LG showed a comparison between autofocus speed of Samsung S5 camera and LG G3 camera. The LG G3 Camera achieved to lock focus consistently faster.
For the rest of the hardware there is actually not much difference compared to the other smartphone manufacturers. LG has demonstrated before though that they are capable of creating high quality smartphones. Most popular the LG Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 and also the LG G2. Also the G3 will definitely be delivered with the newest version of Android 4.4 Kit Kat.
The LG G3 definitely sounds very promising. Now LG needs a very good marketing and pricing strategy to launch successfully. There is a huge difference when it comes to launching strategys. Look at how successful Xiaomi Launched in Malaysia with items sold out in Minutes. Compare that to the Social Media Fiasco of Samsung Malaysia, despite of their Marketing Millions. Or you choose to completely ignore Malaysia at Launch – I hope LG will learn from that soon and launch in Malaysia too. Then they could have a chance to get a top spot in our market.
Now lets get to the most important point for a lof the customers. The LG G3 will sell at S$868 (2228 RM) without contract and the 32GB bit more expensive with S$928 (2328 RM) in Singapore. So far LG did not announce it officially Malaysia, so first it will probably come via imports from our neighbour. If LG should keep the price roughly the same for Malaysia its on par with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC ONE M8. We are not sure if that is a good strategy when it comes to pricing, since Samsung owns definitely more brand equity and will be hard to beat at same pricing. We will report more as soon as the G3 launches here officially.
