Microsoft changes Nokia Brand to ‘Microsoft Lumia’
“Despite the fact that Microsoft’s OS powers most Nokia devices, the Nokia brand repertoire was pushing the sales.”
The deal between Nokia and Microsoft has finalized for some time now and Microsoft will take over the rights to all of Nokia Smartphones and Feature Phones, as announced earlier by the two giants. Contrary to what most of us believed, is that apparently Microsoft will not be using the prominent Nokia brand, but will shift the Windows Phone based smartphones to its new brand, “Microsoft Lumia”.
According to news by “Nokiapoweruser”, Microsoft has already informed Nokia and all its suppliers and telling them about new brand strategy with ” Microsoft Lumia”.
“Please note that upon the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia, the name of Nokia Corporation/Nokia will change to Microsoft Lumia. Microsoft Lumia is the legal entity name that should be used for VAT IDs and for the issuance of invoices,” Microsoft noted in the leaked letter.
Now its official, according to this Post on Nokia France Facebook, the followers will be notified an the it will now be called “Microsoft Lumia”. According to the Verge this Rebranding will continue in other countries.
Microsoft has already been working on redirecting some pages from Nokia to Microsoft.com these past days, and Microsoft Lumia was a safe bet for the Rebranding.
The whole thing is a rather bold move by Microsoft. Sure Windows OS is a Microsoft Product, but its definitely Nokia who made sure the Windows operating system can survive against Android and Apple OS with its famous Lumia Smartphone Series.
Through the change of the brand name from Nokia to “Microsoft Lumia”, they will be able to position all phones and the OS under a single brand name.
Especially Nokias Lumia Smartphone and Phablet Series has gained popularity in recent years and helped fighting off the competitors Apple and Samsung with great prices in Malaysia and a lot of Nokia Fans on Facebook. With features like 42MP Cameras Nokia was actually on a good way after dropping Sales worldwide from the former Feature Phone Giant. Apart from buying the brand, Microsoft has also licensed Nokias Apps like Nokia Music and Nokia HERE, but here they will probably need to keep the brand name.
The leaked letter showed also other important points:
“Under the terms of the sale, Microsoft will assume all rights, benefits, and obligations of the Nokia Devices and Services business, including Nokia’s agreements with suppliers, customers and partners which pertain to the Devices and Services business. Therefore, the purpose of this letter is to update you that the current terms and conditions that you have with the Devices and Services business will not change.”
The european smartphone producer, once clearly Number One worldwide, in the pre smartphone area, has agreed no to use the brand for its mobile phones until 2015, after then NOKIA will be allowed to produce phones under its old brand name.
With Nokia branded Smartphones stopping to exist at least for coming years, thats truly marks the end of an era. If we remember back, the Giant From Finland used to be clear Number 1, but they overslept the Smartphone and Tablet Future.
One thing which might promise a brighter future for Nokia is if they finally accept the clear Dominance of Android world wide. The Nokia X was an nice try, but not really impressive. If Nokia can achieve to fully utilize the Power of Android OS and combine with its quality smartphones and features, they can definitely stand a chance – but not until 2016 !
What do you think of the name change to “Microsoft Lumia”?
